Drug Uses - Famvir is used to treat recurrent genital herpes, to suppress recurrent genital herpes and to treat of recurrent herpes simplex virus infections (genital herpes and cold sores) in HIV-infected patients and herpes zoster (shingles). Famvir is antiviral medication taken only if prescribed by a doctor.

How Taken - Episodic treatment: one 125-mg tablet twice a day for 5 days to treat an eruption of genital herpes. Suppressive treatment: one 250-mg tablet twice a day for up to 1 year to suppress the virus and preclude eruptions. HIV patients should take 500 mg tablet twice a day for 7 days. Take Famvir with or without food.

Warnings/Precautions - Consult with your doctor before taking Famvir if you are allergic to penciclovir (Denavir) or if you suffer from kidney disease. In this case you may need special dosage or monitoring. It may also happen that you are not able to use Famvir. Famvir is FDA pregnancy category B. It is not expected to be detrimental to an unborn baby. Do not take Famvir if you are pregnant without medical consultation.

Missed Dose - You should take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Nevertheless, if it is near to the time for your next dose, do not take an extra tablet to catch up for the dose you forgot. Wait and take your next tablet at the regular time. Do not take a double dose.

Possible Side Effects - Stop taking Famvir and seek immediate medical attention if you suffer from an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives). Continue taking Famvir and consult with your doctor if you have nausea or vomiting, a headache, diarrhea, dizziness, tingling in your hands or feet, or itching. Other side effects may also occur.

Storage - Store at room temperature 150C and 300C (590F and 860F). Famvir should be kept out of the reach of children.

Overdose - There is no reliable data about Famvir oberdosage. Anyway, an overdose of acyclovir (Zovirax, a similar drug) may be the reason of seizures, hallucinations, and kidney damage (decreased urine production). Seek immediate medical attention.

More Information - Start treatment with Famvir just as the symptoms (ingling, burning, blisters) appear. Do not change your dosage without medical consultation. Do not contact with other people by infected areas.
