Drug Uses -
Fluoxetine a psychotropic drug used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and other disorders.
How Taken -
Take Fluoxetine orally once or twice a day regularly. The relief usually begins after 4 weeks of taking Fluoxetine. When treating obsessive-compulsive disorder, it may take 5 weeks for relief to appear. The effect usually lasts for 9 months after 3-month treatment.
Warnings/Precautions -
Consult with your doctor if you had a heart attack or seizures or if you suffer from liver disease or diabetes. Fluoxetine causes drowsiness, so be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. You should avoid such activities if you experience drowsiness. Notify your doctor and stop using Fluoxetine if you suffer a skin rash or hives or if you feel dizzy when get up. Carefully watch over your weight and appetite. You may experience decreased appetite and weight loss, especially if you are underweight or suffer from bulimia. Do not take Fluoxetine without medical consultation if you plan to become pregnant, if you are pregnant or if you are breast-feeding a baby. There is no reliable data if Fluoxetine is deleterious to an unborn baby, but it is known that Fluoxetine passes into breast milk.
Missed Dose -
You should take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Nevertheless, if it is near to the time for your next dose, do not take an extra tablet to catch up for the dose you forgot. Wait and take your next tablet at the regular time. Do not take a double dose.
Possible Side Effects -
If you experience any side effect, contact your doctor immediately. Common side effects are: abnormal dreams, abnormal ejaculation, abnormal vision, anxiety, diminished sex drive, dizziness, dry mouth, flu-like symptoms, flushing, gas, headache, impotence, insomnia, itching, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, rash, sinusitis, sleepiness, sore throat, sweating, tremors, upset stomach, vomiting, weakness, yawning. Less common side effects are: abnormal taste, agitation, bleeding problems, chills, confusion, ear pain, emotional instability, fever, frequent urination, high blood pressure, increased appetite, loss of memory, palpitations, ringing in the ears, sleep disorders, weight gain, excessive menstrual bleeding, frequent urination, hyperactivity, mania or hypomania (inappropriate feelings of elation and/or rapid thoughts), nosebleeds, personality changes, and thirst. Other side effects may also occur.
Storage -
Store at 20-25 ?C (68-77 ?F) away from moisture.
Overdose -
Seek emergency if an overdosage is suspected. Typical signs of Fluoxetine overdosage are Nausea, rapid heartbeat, seizures, sleepiness, vomiting, coma, delirium, fainting, high fever, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, mania, rigid muscles, sweating, stupor. Fatal outcome is also possible. Fluoxetine in combination with other drugs may also cause overdose.
More Information -
Fluoxetine interactions with MAO inhibitors may be life-threatening. Do not use Fluoxetine before 14 days after you took MAO inhibitors are over. MAO inhibitor medications should not be taken for at least five weeks after discontinuing Fluoxetine. There are no reliable studies of Fluoxetine in the US. Do not take other medicines without medical consultation.
