Drug Uses - Naprosyn is used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, juvenile arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, bursitis and tendonitis, and acute gout. Take this medicine to relieve mild to moderate pain. Naprosyn Suspension is prescribed for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis to obtain maximum dosage flexibility based on the patient's weight. Besides it may be prescribed by your doctor for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea.

How Taken - There are few forms of Naprosyn taken orally. The first is a regular tablet, the second is extended-release tablet and the third is a liquid for oral use. Usually it should be taken twice a day for arthritis, every 8 hours for gout. To relieve pain it is taken once a day (if you use extended-release tablets) or every 6-8 hours (if you use regular tablets). Upset stomach may occur while taking Naprosyn. It is recommended to take Naprosyn with food or milk.

Warnings/Precautions - Consult with your doctor before taking Naprosyn. It is necessary to tell the next information: if you experience an allergy to aspirin or any other NSAIDs, an ulcer or bleeding in your stomach, drink more than three alcoholic drinks a day, liver disease, have kidney disease, a coagulation (bleeding) disorder, congestive heart failure, fluid retention, heart disease or hypertension (high blood pressure). In such conditions you may not be able to take Naprosyn or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment. Naprosyn is in the FDA pregnancy category B. It is not expected to be detrimental to an unborn baby. Do not take Naprosyn late in pregnancy (the third trimester) because there is possibility that it can affect the baby's heart. Consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or if you are breast-feeding a baby, as Naprosyn passes into breast milk.

Missed Dose - In case you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But don't take extra dose in situation when you forget to take Naprosyn and it is near the time for the next intake. Wait and take next dose according to the schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up. If it is necessary to take Naprosyn, take the missed dose and then wait recommended time before another dose.

Possible Side Effects - Consult with your doctor if you have blood in vomit or bloody, black, or tarry stools. These symptoms are typical when the gastrointaestinal tract (stomach or intestines) is damaged. It can be dangerous. In case you suffer from any of the next side effects, stop taking Naprosyn and contact your doctor immediately: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); muscle cramps, numbness, or tingling; ulcers (open sores) in the mouth; rapid weight gain (fluid retention); seizures; decreased hearing or ringing in the ears; yellow color of your skin or eyes (jaundice); or abdominal cramping, heartburn, or indigestion. In case you have dizziness or headache; nausea, diarrhea, or constipation; depression; fatigue or weakness; dry mouth; or irregular menstrual periods do not stop taking Naprosyn but consult with your doctor.

Storage - Naprosyn should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed container and out of direct sunlight; try to avoid heat above 40°C (104°F).

Overdose - The symptoms of overdose are drowsiness, heartburn, indigestion, nausea or vomiting, seizures. If you take a big amount of tablets or large volume of suspension consult with doctor and seek immediate medical attention.

More Information - Prolonged sunlight exposure should be avoided because Naprosyn may increase the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight. Wear protective clothing and use a sunscreen when it is impossible to prevent such exposure. Alcohol consumption should be stopped or limited. More than three strong drinks a day along with Naprosyn administration may elevate the risk of stomach bleeding. Be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities because Naprosyn administration may cause dizziness. If you have dizziness, try to avoid these activities. It is known that many over-the-counter cough, cold, allergy, and pain medicines contain aspirin or other medicines similar to Naprosyn. Before taking them you should consult with your doctor.
