Drug Uses - Nexium is known as proton pump inhibitor. It decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Nexium is indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) - condition that is characterized by backward flow of acid from the stomach that causes heartburn and injury of the esophagus (food pipe between the mouth and stomach). Nexium helps to relieve the symptoms of GERD and prevent further damage to the esophagus. Moreover, it allows the esophagus to heal. Sometimes it is prescribed with other drugs to prevent stomach ulcers.

How Taken - The form of Nexium is a delayed-release (long-acting) capsule taken orally once a day at least one hour before a meal. Take it regularly according to the schedule. Swallow capsule whole without chewing, dividing or crushing. In case you are not able to swallow it, put one tablespoon of cool, soft applesauce in an empty bowl. Open one Nexium capsule. The pellets inside should be carefully sprinkled onto the applesauce. Then mix pellets with the applesauce, and swallow the entire tablespoonful immediately without chewing. Do not keep this mixture for later use.

Warnings/Precautions - If you have ever had any type of liver disease you may not be able to take Nexium or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment. Tell your doctor about it before using Nexium. Nexium is in the FDA pregnancy category B. It is not expected to be detrimental to an unborn baby but first talk to your doctor before taking Nexium if you are pregnant. Consult with your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby because it is not clear whether Nexium passes into breast milk. It has been reported about serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions in patients on penicillin therapy. These reactions take place in case you have a history of penicillin hypersensitivity and/or a history of sensitivity to multiple allergens. Also it has been reported about pseudo membranous colitis with nearly all antibacterial agents, including clarithromycin and amoxicillin. The range in severity may be from mild to life threatening. In patients with diarrhea subsequent to the administration of antibacterial agents these diagnosis should be considered.

Missed Dose - In case you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But don't take extra dose in situation when you have forgotten to take Nexium and it is near the time for the next intake. Wait and take next dose according to the schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up unless otherwise recommended by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects - The most common side effects include headache, constipation, cough, or diarrhea. If you experience throat pain, chest pain, severe stomach pain, or coffee-ground vomit effects consult with your doctor immediately. Allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing) is unlikely but seek medical attention immediately if it happens. If you have other effects not listed above, consult with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

Storage - Store Nexium at 25°C (77°F) in a tightly closed container; excursions permitted to 15 - 30°C (59 - 86°F. Use tight container if the product package is subdivided.

Overdose - Common symptoms of Nexium overdosage are drowsiness, shortness of breath, tremor, loss of coordination, and seizures. In such cases seek emergency.
