Drug Uses -
Paxil is a new antidepressant medication. It is known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is proved that chemical imbalance in the brain may lead to depression and anxiety disorders. Serotonin is a chemical which helps to transmit electrical signals between nerve cells. The mechanism of the process includes some steps: serotonin is released from one nerve cell (the sender) and come to the next (the receiver), where it is either absorbed or returns back to the original sender cell.
How Taken -
Paxil is a tablet taken orally once a day with or without food. Follow the prescribed dose. Take it regularly and continue using of Paxil even if you feel well. This drug should be taken for a few weeks before its full effect comes. Do not give up taking Paxil without medical consultation, especially if you have taken large doses for a long time. Probably it will be decreased gradually by your doctor.
Warnings/Precautions -
Before using Paxil tell your doctor the next information: if you have liver disease, kidney disease, seizures or epilepsy, or a manic disorder or suicidal thoughts. In such conditions you may be limited to take Paxil or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment. Paxil is in the FDA pregnancy C. It is not clear whether Paxil will be detrimental to an unborn baby. You should consult with your doctor before taking Paxil if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment or if you are breast-feeding a baby, because it is not known whether Paxil passes into breast milk.
Missed Dose -
In case you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But do not take extra dose in situation when you forget to take a tablet and it is near the time for the next intake. Wait and take next dose according to the schedule. Try not to double the dose to make up.
Possible Side Effects -
There are some serious effects of Paxil: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives), an irregular heartbeat or pulse, low blood pressure (dizziness, weakness), high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision), unusual bleeding or bruising; or fever or chills. In case you have serious side effects contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency. Less serious side effects are headache, tremor, nervousness, or anxiety, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, or changes in appetite or weight, sleepiness or insomnia, decreased sex drive, impotence, difficulty having an orgasm. They may be more likely to occur. If you experience one or more than one less serious side effects or other unusual bothersome effects continue taking Paxil but consult with your doctor.
Storage -
Paxil should be stored at controlled indoor temperature 20 to 25°C (68-77°F).
Overdose -
Symtoms of an overdosage are nausea, vomiting, tremor, seizures, agitation, drowsiness, hyperactivity, and enlarged pupils. In case an overdose is suspected, seek emergency.
More Information -
Be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities because Paxil may lead to dizziness or drowsiness. If you have such signs, try to avoid these activities. Use alcohol with care because it may increase drowsiness or dizziness while using Paxil.
