Drug Uses -
Prevacid decreases acid production in the stomach. It is used for treatment and prevention of stomach and intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis and other conditions that are caused by excessive stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It may be also prescribed for other purposes than mentioned above.
How Taken -
Prevacid is an extended-release (long-acting) capsule. It should be taken orally once a day before meal. It is obligatory to swallow it whole without chewing, dividing or crushing. In case you have difficulty swallowing capsule open it and sprinkle granules on applesauce and swallowed immediately without chewing or crushing. Do not give up taking Prevacid without consultation with your doctor, even if you feel well.
Warnings/Precautions -
If have ever had any type of liver disease you may be limited to take Prevacid or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment. Consult with your doctor before use Prevacid. Prevacid is in the FDA pregnancy category B. It is not expected to be detrimental to an unborn baby but before taking Prevacid if you are pregnant first talking to your doctor. Consult with your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby because it is not clear whether Prevacid passes into breast milk.
Missed Dose -
In case you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But do not take extra dose in situation when you forget to take Prevacid and it is near the time for the next intake. Wait and take next dose according to the schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up for a missed one.
Possible Side Effects -
Serious side effects are not likely to occur. Stop taking Prevacid and seek emergency if you have an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives). The less serious side effects are diarrhea, nausea, or abdominal pain, dizziness or headache. Consult with your doctor if you have such problems or any other unusual or bothersome effects not mentioned above.
Storage -
Prevacid should be stored at indoor temperature. Avoid humidity and heat.
Overdose -
It is unlikely to overdose this medication. In case an overdose is suspected, seek emergency.
