Drug Uses - Prilosec is a drug used for the treatment of various acid-related stomach and esophagus problems (e.g., GERD, ulcers, erosive esophagitis, or Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, persistent heartburn). It may be also administered with antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, clarithromycin) in order to treat ulcers.

How Taken - Prilosec comes as a delayed-release 20 mg tablet. It should be taken once a day (every 24 hours) for two weeks (14 days) before meal. Do not take it for more than 14 days or repeat a 14-day course more often than every 4 months. Take the tablet whole without chewing, dividing or crushing.

Warnings/Precautions - Your doctor should know your medical history, especially if you have liver problems, stomach problems (e.g., tumors), allergy. It is not recommended to take Prilosec if you are pregnant or you are breast-feeding a baby. Because it is not clear whether Prilosec passes into breast milk. In such situations consult with your doctor.

Missed Dose - In case you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But do not take extra dose in situation when you forget to take Prilosec and it is near the time for the next intake. Wait and take next dose according to the schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Possible Side Effects - Prilosec usage may cause diarrhea, constipation, stomachache, nausea, gas, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, back or joint pain, nervousness, sleep disturbances, cough, chest pain, unusual thirst, change in amount of urine or vision changes during the first few days. If you have these side effects consult with your doctor. It may rarely lead to the loss of hair, ringing in the ears, swelling of the stomach or fatigue. Allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, dizziness or trouble breathing) is unlikely to occur. In case you have an allergic reaction seek emergency. If you experience other effects not mentioned above, consult with your doctor.

Storage - Prilosec should be stored at indoor temperature between 15 to 30 o C (59 and 86 o F).

Overdose - In case an overdose is suspected, seek emergency. Symptoms of overdose are confusion, unusual sweating, blurred vision, unusually fast heartbeat, seizures.

More Information - Prilosec is not administered in case you have only occasional heartburn, have one episode of heartburn a week or less, want immediate relief of heartburn. Tell your doctor if you take any other medication. Do not start or stop taking any medicine if it is not approved by your doctor.
