Drug Uses -
Prozac is indicated as a drug used for the treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and many other disorders.
How Taken -
Prozac should be taken orally once or twice a day. Take it regularly at the same time. It needs 4 weeks before effect appears. The effect lasts about 9 months after a 3-month course of treatment. If you have obsessive-compulsive disorder, the full effect may take 5 weeks to appear.
Warnings/Precautions -
Talk to you doctor and tell about all the health problems you have had before. If you are recovering from a heart attack or if you have liver disease or diabetes, consult with your doctor whether it is possible to use Prozac. It can cause drowse, carelessness or may affect your judgment. Be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities because Prozac administration may lead to dizziness or drowsiness. You may have dizziness actually faint when getting up from a lying or sitting position. Try to get up slowly and if this problem does not disappear consult with your doctor. If you experience allergic reaction (skin rash or hives) stop taking Prozac immediately and consult with your doctor. Appetite and weight may be decreased while taking Prozac, especially in depressed people who are already underweight and in those with bulimia. Talk to your doctor you are pregnant or could become pregnant. It is not well known whether Prozac may cause influence on a baby. Nevertheless this medication appears in breast milk and is not recommended if you are breast-feeding.
Missed Dose -
In case you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember the same day. But do not take extra dose in situation when you forget to take Prozac and it is near the time for the next intake (next day). Wait and take next dose according to the schedule. Do not double the dose it is not allowed to take 2 doses at once.
Possible Side Effects -
Side effects are unlikely to occur. If you have any of them notify your doctor immediately. Doctor can determine if it is safe for you to take Prozac. Common side effects while using Prozac are abnormal dreams, abnormal ejaculation, abnormal vision, anxiety, diminished sex drive, dizziness, dry mouth, flu-like symptoms, flushing, gas, headache, impotence, insomnia, itching, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, rash, sinusitis, sleepiness, sore throat, sweating, tremors, upset stomach, vomiting, weakness, yawning. You may also have less common side effects: abnormal taste, agitation, bleeding problems, chills, confusion, ear pain, emotional instability, fever, frequent urination, high blood pressure, increased appetite, loss of memory, palpitations, ringing in the ears, sleep disorders, weight gain. Children and adolescents may experience agitation, excessive menstrual bleeding, frequent urination, hyperactivity, mania or hypomania (inappropriate feelings of elation and/or rapid thoughts), nosebleeds, personality changes, and thirst. You may also have any other bothersome effects. In such situations consult with you doctor immediately.
Storage -
Prozac should be stored in a dry place at 20-25 0 C (68-77 0F).
Overdose -
Overdose of Prozac can be hazardous to health and even mortal. In combination with certain other drugs Prozac may cause symptoms of overdosage. In case of overdose suspicion seek emergency immediately. The symptoms of overdose are coma, delirium, fainting, high fever, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, mania, rigid muscles, sweating, stupor.
More Information -
Do not use Prozac if you are taking MAO inhibitors or if you have been taking them for at least two weeks before. MAO is not allowed for at least five weeks after discontinuing Prozac. Be aware that most antidepressants may slow reflexes or impair judgment. Caution is advised. Prozac has not been properly studied in the US and re-evaluation is advised.
