Drug Uses - Retin -A is a medication that helps to improve the appearance and texture of the skin by a mild, superficial peel of the epidermis. Retin-A has effects not only on the superficial (epidermis) part but the deep (dermis) part of the skin. Retin-A usage helps to decrease the effects of sunlight that cause aging.

How Taken - Using a gauze pad or cotton swab thin layer of Retin-A should be applied to affected area once a day at bedtime. Wash your hands immediately after use. Do not use this medication more frequently or in excessive amounts. It does not improve the results, but may cause side effects. Do not apply Retin-A near the eyes, mouth, or open cuts since this medication can irritate sensitive skin. It may happen that acne worsens when the medication is first used. In this case continue therapy. The full benefits of this medication may appear in three to six weeks after start therapy. Mild soap should be used while applying Retin-A, because soaps, cleansers, medicated creams or lotions can increase skin irritation. Consult with your doctor which soap should be used. Do not wash face excessively.

Warnings/Precautions - Retin-A can increase sensitivity to sunlight, wind and cold. Try to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and sunlamps. You should wear protective clothing and use an effective sunscreen. Be careful when using Retin-A while being pregnant. Use it only if clearly needed. Consult with your doctor before breast-feeding because it is not clear whether Retin-A appears in breast milk.

Missed Dose - In case you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But do not take an extra dose in situation when you forget to take Retin-A and it is near the time for the next intake. Wait and take the next dose according to the schedule. Do not double the dose.

Possible Side Effects - Using Retin-A may cause irritation. It is recommended to start treatment on a small area of skin. Sun and ultraviolet rays cause additional irritation. Try to avoid such exposure during treatment. You may notice that your problem worsens during the first weeks of treatment. It is a normal reaction because small cysts deep within the skin are being eliminated at an accelerated rate. Stop the usage if you have hypersensitivity to any components of Retin-A.

Storage - Retin-A should be stored at room temperature away from sunlight. Keep it out of the reach of children.

Overdose - Excessive application of Retin-A will not lead to faster or better results. Applying Retin-A may cause redness, peeling, or discomfort. Symptoms of an overdosage may include transient headache, facial flushing, celosias, abdominal pain, dizziness and ataxia.

More Information - In case you have been previously treated with keratolytic preparations or exfoliants, wait until the rash disappears. Cosmetics are allowed, but clean the skin thoroughly before applying the medication.
