Drug Uses -
Soma is a muscle relaxant. It is indicated to relieve the pain and stiffness of muscle spasms and discomfort due to strain and sprain.
How Taken -
Soma is a tablet to be taken orally. It is recommended to take it with food to prevent stomach upset. The dose for adults is one tablet (800 mg) three times a day at bedtime. Do not use Soma in patients under age 12.
Warnings/Precautions -
Avoid taking Soma in case you have acute intermittent porphyria. Your doctor should know your medical history, especially if you have liver problems. If have ever had any type of liver disease you may not be able to take Soma or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment. It is not recommended to take Soma if you are pregnant or you are breast-feeding a baby, as it is not clear whether Soma passes into breast milk.
Missed Dose -
In case you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember within 1 hour. Otherwise skip that dose and take the next one according to schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Possible Side Effects -
You may experience dizziness, vertigo, ataxia, tremor, agitation, irritability, headache, depressive reactions, syncope, insomnia, skin rash, erythema multiforme, pruritus, eosinophilia and fixed drug eruption with cross reaction to meprobamate while taking Soma. Allergic or idiosyncratic reactions occasionally develop. They usually occur within the period of the first to fourth dose in patients that have never had any contact with the drug. Severe reactions may include asthmatic episodes, fever, weakness, dizziness, angioneurotic edema, smarting eyes, hypotension, and anaphylactoid shock.
Storage -
Soma should be stored at indoor temperature between 15 and 30 0C (59 and 86 0F) in a tightly closed container.
Overdose -
The symptoms of an overdosage are low blood pressure (weakness, fainting, confusion), decreased breathing, and unconsciousness. In case an overdose is suspected, seek emergency.
More Information -
Be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities because Soma administration may lead to dizziness or drowsiness. Try not to take strong drinks while taking Soma, because alcohol may elevate the risk of having drowsiness and dizziness.
