Drug Uses - Zoloft is used for the treatment of depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (also called OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (also called PTSD) in adults. It may also be used to treat OCD in children (ages 6-12) and adolescents (ages 12-17).

How Taken - Zoloft is a tablet to be taken orally once a day with or without food. Follow the prescribed dose. Take it regularly and continue using of Zoloft even if you feel well. This drug should be taken for a few weeks before its full effect appears. Do not give up taking Zoloft without medical consultation, especially if you have taken large doses for a long time. Probably it will be decreased gradually by your doctor.

Warnings/Precautions - Before using Zoloft tell your doctor the next information: if you have liver disease, kidney disease, suffer from seizures, or a manic disorder or suicidal thoughts. In such conditions you may not be able to take Zoloft or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment. Zoloft is in the FDA pregnancy C. It is not clear whether Zoloft is detrimental to an unborn baby. You should consult with your doctor before taking Zoloft if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment or if you are breast-feeding a baby, because it is not known whether Zoloft passes into breast milk.

Missed Dose - In case you take Zoloft once a day in the morning, take the missed a dose as soon as possible. But do not take an extra dose in situation when you forget to take a tablet and it is near the time for the next intake. Wait and take the next dose according to the schedule. In case you take Zoloft once a day at bedtime and forget to take it until the next morning, skip the missed dose. Try not to double the dose to catch up.

Possible Side Effects - There are some serious effects of Zoloft: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives), an irregular heartbeat or pulse, low blood pressure (dizziness, weakness), high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision), unusual bleeding or bruising; fever or chills. In case you have serious side effects contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency. Less serious side effects are headache, tremor, nervousness, or anxiety, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, or changes in appetite or weight, sleepiness or insomnia, decreased sex drive, impotence, difficulty having an orgasm. They may be more likely to occur. If you experience one or more than one less serious side effects or other unusual bothersome effect, continue taking Zoloft but consult with your doctor.

Storage - Zoloft should be stored at 25°C (77°F); excursions permitted to 15° - 30°C (59° - 86°F).

Overdose - Symtoms of an overdosage are nausea, vomiting, tremor, seizures, agitation, drowsiness, hyperactivity, and enlarged pupils. Seek emergency in case an overdose is suspected.

More Information - Be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities because Zoloft may lead to dizziness or drowsiness. If you have such signs try to avoid these activities. Use alcohol with care because it may increase drowsiness or dizziness while using Zoloft.
