Drug Uses - Zovirax is used for the treatment of herpes infection. It helps to decrease pain and itching and to promote healing. Applied topically it does not prevent the recurrence of sores but may decrease the pain and itching if applied when the earliest symptoms first appear. Taken orally it decreases the frequency and severity of recurrent sores, but it is used only by people with severe herpes infection because of possible side effects. This medication may be prescribed for other uses.

How Taken - Start treatment with Zovirax as soon as possible after the first appearance of symptoms (e.g. tingling, burning, blisters). You should wash your hands before and after applying Zovirax. To prevent spreading the virus to other body parts and to other people you should wear a glove or a finger cot or use an applicator (e.g. cotton swab) when applying Zovirax. Cover lesions completely. A one-half inch ribbon of Zovirax should cover approximately 4 square inches of surface area. Avoid contact with the eyes. Zovirax topical should be applied every 3 hours, six times a day for seven days. Follow prescribed recommendations carefully. Keep lesions caused by herpes viruses as clean and dry as possible. Loose clothing helps to prevent irritation of the lesions.

Warnings/Precautions - You should tell your doctor if you have any other medical conditions or if you use any other medications. Zovirax is in the FDA pregnancy C. It is not clear whether Zovirax is detrimental to an unborn baby. You should consult with your doctor before taking Zovirax if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment or if you are breast-feeding a baby, because it is not known whether Zovirax passes into breast milk.

Missed Dose - Zovirax should be applied regularly. In case you have missed an application, use Zovirax as soon as you remember and apply further doses at your regular interval (e.g., every 3 hours) until you go to bed. But don't apply an extra dose in situation when you forget to take Zovirax and it is near the time for the next intake. Wait and take the next dose according to the schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Possible Side Effects - Serious side effects are not known during treatment with Zovirax topical. In case you have an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; rash; hives; itching; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face) seek emergency. Less serious side effects are more likely to occur. Do not give up using Zovirax topical but consult with your doctor if you have itching, stinging, burning, or a rash.

Storage - Zovirax should be stored at temperature below 25oC. Do not freeze.

Overdose - An overdosage of Zovirax is not likely to occur. Seek emergency in case an overdose is suspected.

More Information - Do not use Zovirax Cream in patients with hypersensitiveness to acyclovir or propylene glycol. Zovirax is most effective if it is started within 48 hours after the rash first appears. Follow prescribed recommendations carefully.
